Western science limits itself by considering cognitive functions such as thinking as the highest state of  consciousness. However, in eastern philosophy, as well as in western mysticism, the existence of even higher states of consciousness is common knowledge. This higher state of consciousness transcends thinking and other processes of the logical mind and has been called the fourth state of consciousness: the state of 'thoughtless awareness'.

According to the Meta Science of Sahaja Yoga, as revealed by H.H. Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi, there exists a subtle instrument in each human being which is ready for connection with the higher consciousness beyond the human awareness. When this connection between our limited self (The Atma) and the Unlimited Divine Power (The Paramatma) is established and made stronger, transformation within occurs automatically. Our attention turns inward and we become very introspective. We start judging and perfecting ourselves instead of judging and trying to perfect others. It is logical also because we have no control over others but we can control and change ourselves.

In spite of tremendous advance that Medical Science has made over past five decades, failure in adopting a holistic approach towards treatment of diseases has brought about serious limitations. Even though great success has been achieved in open-heart surgeries and kidney transplants, we have found no cure to some common psychosomatic diseases like Migraine, Asthma, Epilepsy or Cancer – which are infact on the increase.

Many modern therapies are being practiced these days like acupuncture, biofeedback technique, hypnosis, quantum healing etc. However these methods are mostly nonspecific in nature except ‘Yoga’, which deals with both physical and psychic aspects of human being and has gained tremendous momentum to become a world philosophy. However unfortunately it has been exploited by yoga organizations for money making process and this has given a big blow to the good name of ‘Yoga’.

There are many forms of meditation, ranging in complexity from strict, regulated practices to general recommendations. If practiced regularly, meditation is thought to help develop habitual, unconscious microbehaviours that can potentially produce widespread positive effects on physical and psychological functioning. Meditation even for 15 minutes twice a day has been shown to bring beneficial results.

Despite all its popularity, today very few of us truly know what meditation is. Some regard meditation is the mental concentration on something, others consider that we meditate when we imagine something that gives us peace or satisfaction. All these methods are being with one goal to slow down and, eventually, completely stop the incessant activity of our minds. These exercises are not really meditation - they are substitutes for meditation because it is normally very difficult to stop our minds all-together. In reality, meditation is a state of thoughtless awareness. It is not an act of doing - it is a state of awareness. We either in this state or we are not, regardless of what we are doing in life. Truly, a man can be in meditation while doing his day's labors as another man can be very far from meditation while sitting in a lotus posture on the top of a mountain.
